Davanagere: Shivashankar Sutar, veteran artist and guest faculty member at the University Visual Arts College in the Kala Gangotri campus, recently held a one-man show of his abstract paintings at the Drushyavishwa Kala Gallery here. The solo show drew a huge response from the fine art students, teachers, artists, and art lovers.
Lizard, a favourite in most of the paintings: Just like fishes in Chi Su Krishna Setty's paintings and horses in painting wizard M F Hussain's artworks, Shivashankar Sutar has developed a close proximity with lizard. He has exhibited 80 paintings, including 22 graphic paintings.
By and large, you can find the common house lizard in most of his abstract paintings. Various people have different kinds of opinions and notions about the common house gecko, but not Shivashankar Sutar. Invariably, it is omnipresent in most of his abstract paintings!
A variety of colors and compositions: Prof L K Hanumantachar, former Principal of the University Visual Arts College, Davanagere showered praises at the outcome of Shivashankar Sutar's abstract paintings. Expressing his happiness, over the artistic quality of the works.
Prof L K Hanumantachar opined: Shivashankar Sutar has done a tremendous job, by working with multi colors, and dimensions. He has done justice to the compositions, brush shades, and all of them give a pleasant feeling to the viewer, making the visit to the exhibition, worthwhile.
An experience of 12 years: Prof Babu Jattakar, veteran artist, and former Principal of the College of Fine Arts, Karnataka Chitrakala Parishat, was equally magnanimous in appreciating the artistic skill sets of Shivashankar Sutar.
He asserted that learning is an eternal element, and one should grow with experience by sharing, and learning the ideas with students. Shivashankar Sutar's 12 years as a guest faculty member has come handy in coming out with the wonderful art works.
Doing an exhibition is not a easy job: He highlighted the challenges encountered during the process of holding an exhibition, and described that doing an exhibition is not a easy job. It is not just like bringing some paintings and merely displaying them in a hall or gallery. Introspecting our journey so far, and interlinking the same with contemporary patterns, in the works, is what that makes a difference. One may do an art work, sitting within the four halls; but its broader outlook is to ensure that it reaches a bigger network in the outside world.
Works in multi mediums: Prof Babu Jattakar, stressing the significance of holding the show in his own college felt, Shivashankar Sutar, could have done the same elsewhere, either in Bengaluru, or otherplaces. However, he thought of doing so with the intention of enabling his students witness and interact with him over the artworks. He has worked in acrylic, watercolor, printmaking, multimedia forms, keeping in mind a variety of themes. He described the works on display as 'wonderful'.
A religious practitioner: Dr Satish Vallyapure, Principal of the University Visual Arts College, was full of praises for the art journey of Shivashankar Sutar.
He has dedicated himself to the art world, keeping a close nexus with the students, and continuously working in screen painting, figurative painting, abstract painting, among many other patterns. He has also, by his mild, friendly manners, and religious practice of art works, has evolved himself as a role model in the institution, appreciated Dr Satish Vallyapure.
Exhibits, a revelation of experiments: Prof Dattatreya N Bhat, art critic and guest faculty of the University Visual Arts College, remarked that the artworks of Shivashankar Sutar, are the most modern, aesthetic, and contemporary. The highlight of all the works on display are nothing short of the revelation of constant experiments of sorts. Lizard has transformed as an identity character in his works, while the colors have multiple layers, one after another, an unusual combination by choice.
He also deploys a combination of lines of different text forms in a subtle way, and highlighting a message in some corner of the painting. His paintings, are a treat to the art lover, summed up, Dattatreya N Bhat.
Father, the source of inspiration: Shivashankar Sutar is a native of Bandarwad village in Afzalpur Taluk, in Kalaburagi district. According to him, his father, who was doing woodcraft was the first source of inspiration. During his childhood, Shivashankar Sutar used to go to temples to do drawing works, which was noticed by a senior artist in the village. It was he, who suggested Shivashankar Sutar to pursue art education in some fine art schools, to take the art talent to a logical end.
Art teacher Haibanna motivates further: When Shivashankar Sutar was undergoing high school education, Haibanna, the art teacher gave further boost to the young mind. He spotted the hidden talent, encouraged, motivated, and also became a source of inspiration to the school going boy.
Formal art education: After completing his matriculation, Shivashankar Sutar, joined the Ideal Fine Arts Institute, also known as Ideal Fine Art Visual Arts College in Kalaburagi, wherein he completed the Diploma, Art Master, graduation and Post Graduation in Graphics courses as well. After completing related qualifications, he joined the Alma mater as one of the teaching faculty. Later on, on the suggestion of V G Andani, founder of the Ideal Fine Arts Institute, Shivashankar Sutar joined the University Visual Arts College, following vacancy in the Graphics division.
Joining UVAC takes to new heights: Perhaps, joining the University Visual Arts College of Davanagere took Shivashankar Sutar to new heights in his artistic journey. Encouraged by the art ambiance, guiding seniors, interested students, paved the way for Shivashankar Sutar, to concentrate on doing art works of his taste. He is grateful to all his senior colleagues like Kammar, Santosh Kulkarni, Girishkumar, Suresh V H, Dattatreya N Bhat, among many others for giving fillip to his artistic journey.
Teaching and painting with students: Shivashankar Sutar, is very happy about his 12 years stint as a guest faculty in the University Visual Arts College, Davanagere. He admits candidly that, along with the tutoring assignment, he has been working hand-in-hand with his students to do art works.
Fourth one-man show: He has already done three one-man shows, so far with the monetary assistance of the Department of Kannada and Culture, Government of Karnataka, while the latest solo-show in Davanagere, happens to be the fourth one.
Print making show in Bengaluru and Spain: Apart from participating in several group shows across the country, Shivashankar Sutar has also participated in the Print Exchange program in Bengaluru, and Print making show in Spain. His paintings have received recognition, twice from the Central Lalit Kala Academy, New Delhi.
Thanks to Graphics Department: Shivashankar Sutar says that, thanks to the prevalence of Graphics department in the college, and encouragement to the same by the Principal, he has been able to work on graphic paintings.
