S Rudramuni: Bangarada Manushya to Family, Friends and Relatives!

Bengaluru: S Rudramuni, retired as a Chief Manager of the State Bank of India(SBI), for official records. But, for the whole family, friends, relatives, and all those who have come in touch with him, he is literally a 'Bangarada Manushya', in whichever way you would like to look at. Perhaps, his relentless struggle, since childhood, a thorny path throughout his student days, adverse conditions, circumstances, and challenges all along in the banking career, shouldering tremendous responsibilities on the family front, undertaking a series of new tasks, post retirement; all pave way for another movie script!

A family man and a social animal: S Rudramuni, goes out of the way to meet the family commitments. Here, family doesn't mean only his children and grandchildren. For him, it is a huge extended one with cousins, brother, sisters, apart from all those who happen to come in touch with him.

Ensuring education, jobs and marriages! If S Rudramuni had limited himself in getting his kith and kin educated and employed, he would have remained like any other responsible guardian. But, his amazing feats go beyond human description. He has gone the extra mile to ensure that all his close and dear ones are adorned with required educational background to secure the right kind of jobs to make a decent and comfortable living. These days, when relationships exist wholly on the social networking sites, S Rudramuni is a glaring and worth emulating, towering personality, too rare to find in the present days.

Mr. Rudramuni S., who retired as an SBI Manager, is not like everyone else. Similarly, when the Vivek Brigade went to bid him farewell, it honoured him and, in doing so, literally upheld the culture and values of Basavanna's land. I went on behalf of the Brigade to felicitate him, and I learned a new lesson that day.

■ From the perspective of his nephew 
He was none other than my uncle, Mr. Rudramuni S., who not only guided and helped me to become a manager in a rural bank, but also extended his support when my mother was suffering from cancer.

■ From the perspective of his sister's husband 
When I had studied only up to PUC and was unemployed, he gave his sister in marriage to me, helped me complete my TCH course, and helped me establish myself in life. More recently, he also helped my son become a rural bank manager. He is none other than my father-in-law, Mr. Rudramuni S.

■ From the perspective of his sister 
Even though I have grown quite old, my brother, Rudramuni S., would lovingly take me to my parental home, buy clothes for me and look after me with affection.

His bank customers said:

"When elderly people stood in queues, Rudramuni S. had the generosity to complete their work quickly. Instead of sending them from one counter to another, he would call them closer, make them sit comfortably and listen to their needs with kindness and patience."

What more could one ask for?

As the saying goes, when one's intentions are good, there is no shortage of good fortune. His daughter has completed KAS, and his son has completed MBBS. Both are now serving in different states.

A person with a deep love for agriculture, he cultivated sandalwood, red sandalwood and other valuable trees on his ten-acre farm. Every Saturday evening, without fail, he would travel to Chitradurga to look after the plantation and return to work as usual on Monday.

As dignitaries on the stage, family members, bank employees and customers shared their thoughts and experiences, my heart swelled with admiration. Every moment of the farewell ceremony proved that he had been a manager loved and respected by ordinary people.

The family members who had traveled from Chitradurga reflected the strength and values of his joint family, particularly at a time when the traditional joint-family system is increasingly giving way to fragmented families.

Yes, after witnessing such a noble personality, I felt compelled to pick up my pen and introduce him to society.

I felt it was necessary to tell the world that there are still people like Rudramuni S. in this self-centred society.

Some of his close associates apparently once told him:

"Sir, you understand people's minds so well. Why don't you enter politics after retirement?"

Mr. Rudramuni gave a profound answer:

"I will not enter politics. I will wear my traditional work clothes and work in the fields with my elder brother."

What a refreshing and inspiring attitude!

Yet, even in the life of such a vibrant and positive person as Mr. Rudramuni, a deeply painful incident occurred. His wife passed away while he was still in the middle of his life.

Indeed, if a person moves forward with determination, there is no room for defeat. If one thinks weakly, there can be no progress. And if one thinks with equanimity, there are no problems that cannot be faced. Mr. Rudramuni S. is a living example of this truth.

I first met Rudramuni Sir when he was accountant of Challakere branch during 93-96. Very nice and hard working person. Always smiling face. He strengthened our association. Very sad to say that, one by one our seniors are retiring. Those Days are memorable golden days. We’ll not forget your efforts for the association.
