Anand Shantaram Parab: Four Decades with Sansuk Industries and Still Serving!

Bengaluru:
These days, whenever friends of the present generation happen to meet, they, after the usual exchange of pleasantries, also do not forget to inquire about the present company they are working for. The reason is that no one wants to be tied to a particular firm for long, let alone remain there for extended periods.

A disqualification for career prospects:
When questioned about this rampant situation, the youth hit back by claiming the necessity of such a trend to boost one's career. Not only that, staying back in the same company for a prolonged period of time is looked down on as a disqualification in surging ahead.

For forty years in the same company:
However, contrary to this predicament, here is an instance of Anand Shantaram Parab, who has completed forty years in one single company. Along with remaining with the same company for a long tenure, he continues to work in the same company. But now it is not his choice, as the Management of the company is interested in retaining his services in the overall interests of the organisation.

Lady Luck on the first day of landing in Mumbai:
For Anand S Parab's luck, on his very first day of arrival in Mumbai, he got a job in Sansuk Industries, a small-scale industry, thanks to the recommendation of Raghunath Bellary, a friend from Dharwad. That was in May 1985, and it was a great sigh of relief, as much before he underwent an ordeal of frequent employment, unemployment in his native town, Dharwad.

In the same company for 40 years!
Radhakrishna Shrinivas Shanbhag, owner of the Sansuk Industries in Girikunj Industrial Estate in Andheri East, Mumbai, gave him an appointment letter in May 1985. Radhakrishna Shrinivas Shanbhag is the founder and proprietor of the company. He founded it in 1974. Anand S Parab has remained there for the last 40 years. According to Sunil Nadkarni, a classmate and friend of Sanjay Shanbhag, the son of Radhakrishna Shrinivas Shanbhag, the concern is more interested in utilising and retaining the services of Anand S Parab, for the latter's sincerity, commitment and loyalty to the company.

Owners keep changing, but Anand continues to remain:
Interestingly and Anand S Parab, after joining the company, has undergone changes of three generations in succession, and he is an eyewitness to all such transformations, Radhakrishna Shrinivas Shanbhag, his son Sanjay Shanbhag, a chemical engineer from the Manipal Academy of Higher Education(MAHE), Manipal, and Pratham Sanjay Shanbhag.

Third generation in succession:
Now, after Sanjay Shanbhag, his son, Pratham Sanjay Shanbhag, is the present Managing Director of Sansuk Industries. According to Anand S Parab, all of them were/are of the height of 6'8", and Pratham could even be 6'10" as well!

Nothing strange or unusual!
When quizzed about the secret behind the four-decade-plus innings in the Sansuk Industries at Andheri in Mumbai, Anand S Parab is not surprised or taken aback. He asserts-It is nothing unusual in small-scale industries. In fact, my predecessor was 74 when he finally bid adieu. Also, there is nothing like retirement as long as you are of utility value to the organisation...

...My Boss gave me everything to continue:
Ultimately, depending upon your capabilities, the management lets you continue in service. During the COVID-19 pandemic, my boss gave me everything that was needed to remain and continue in service. So, what more do you need in the workplace?

A filter manufacturing company: Sansuk Industries, is a filter manufacturing and an ISO 9001: 2015 certified company, producing mainly filters used in Biomedical applications. It also exports 25% of its products and has an International Exporting Certificate(IEC) for the purpose.

Friendly with everyone:
Anand S Parab also informs that he is very happy with the role assigned to him in the company. "This is also the same with almost all other employees(32), but for me, being the senior-most. All of them are very friendly, and they do their assigned tasks in the required manner and give me due respect. So, there is no requirement to be strict unnecessarily when things keep happening as per the desired schedule", he tells.

Working from the Seventh standard!
Anand S Parab's family has six siblings, five brothers and one sister. All of them were born and brought up in Dharwad. Due to the unfavourable circumstances, Anand S Parab was compelled to start working at a tender age while he was studying in the seventh standard! In other words, he took care of his education-related expenditure on his own and that too right from the seventh standard onwards.

Rs 100 per month salary!
He did part-time jobs like a newspaper hawker and supplied milk in the early wee hours of the day, when most of his classmates and friends were still in bed. He performed these odd jobs until he passed out of the school. While in the PUC, he started working for the Elmeca Works private company in Attikolla locality for a monthly salary of Rs 100/-!

Multiple jobs at various places:
Anand also shifted over to some other jobs, like those in Desai, Patravali Industries in Belagavi, etc. He began searching for jobs after completing his second year in the BA degree course. Anand even went to places like Hospete for the same. There, he worked for Puja Tyre Retreading Company for three years. In between, he came back to Dharwad and did a Diploma in Foundry Technology, which is also called National Council for Training in Vocational Trades(NCTVT), from Mysuru Kirloskar at Harihar and Sattur. After completing the Diploma, he again left for Belagavi in search of a job.

Again, back to Dharwad:
Anand worked for a company at Belagavi for three years. Due to a trade union deadlock, the company came to a standstill and was ultimately closed down. Then left with no choice, he once again came back to his home town Dharwad. It was in 1984, and he kept on trying for an alternative, but ended up doing menial work. It was in such an adverse situation that he decided to migrate to the business capital, and there was no looking back for him later.

Education in Dharwad:
Anand S Parab studied at the Municipal Corporation High School in Malamaddi, Dharwad, from 1st to 4th standard and later joined the Basel Mission High School from 5th standard onwards. He completed both SSLC and PUC from the same institution.

Dad, a Captain in the Indian Army: Anand's family has been in Dharwad for the past 60-70 years. His father was a captain in the Indian Army, and he used to travel across the country, almost from Kashmir to Kanyakumari. Interestingly, his posting was all along in Kashmir.

Took part in four wars!
Anand's father boasted of a unique distinction of taking part in four wars. However, due to his military duties and responsibilities, he hardly came to Dharwad and visited home only once in 2-3 years.

Basavanna: Equality, Humanity and Human Rights

Bengaluru: Akshaya Trutiya is the birthday of Lord Basaveshwara or Basavanna, the 12th-century revolutionary poet and religious reformer who rebelled against all blind beliefs, practices and rituals of Hinduism. It also goes to his credit of bringing God to one’s palms while simultaneously and vehemently opposing the tradition of visiting temples and places of pilgrimages in search of the almighty. Interestingly, unfortunately, or sadly what his followers or disciples have been doing all along would be another separate topic for discussion and better to forget for the time being. A Hindu Protestant: Dr Godwin Shiri, former Director of Christian Institute For The Study Of Religion And Society (CISRS), Bengaluru, during an informal interaction, opined-“Basavanna can be aptly described as a Hindu Protestant as he was in the forefront of opposing blind beliefs”. Influenced by Buddha: Mallikarjun G Kelagade, former Director of the Department of Information and Public Relations (DIPR) kee...

Bengaluru: Arya Durga Kirani Stores, with Rukmini and Saraswati outlets, are household names for all those residing in and natives of Dharwad. It was a humble and austere beginning, dating back a few decades, thanks to hard work, sincerity, and trustworthy behaviour with customers, the business flourished and grew in leaps and bounds in an unimaginable proportion. Ankola, a coastal town, is renowned for its Salt Satyagraha during the freedom struggle movement. He began working at a ration shop while he was only eight years of age and continued working until he became 15 years old. Mahalakshmi Hotel boomerangs: Then Gajanan Vitthal Shetti came to Hubballi to do business. He came with his father, Vitth...
