A native of Haralur village: Basavaraj Ullagaddi is a native of Haralur village in Mudhol Taluk of Bagalkote district and a small peasant with just 1.5-02 acres of land, and is managing about 2.5 acres of land under the system of sharecropping. In all, he is managing about 4.5 acres of land holdings apart from being a daily wage earner.

Two lakhs gross income from Garlic:
Basavaraj Ullagaddi is growing Turmeric and sugarcane intercropped with Garlic in his meagre land holdings. From just 18 gunta of his land, he has made a gross income of Rs. Two lakhs by growing Garlic as an intercrop in Sugarcane.

Four and a half lakhs from Sugarcane: Basavaraj Ullagaddi had also grown Sugarcane in an area of 2.5-03 acres last year and reaped the crop to the quantum of 150 tons, fetching him another gross income of about Rs 04.50 lakhs in 10-11 months.

A happy person at the end of the day: Basavaraj Ullagaddi is a casual labourer, small farmer and a sharecropper with a negligible portion of land as his own. But he is wise enough to generate enough income for his small family of wife and parents.

Being hardworking and vigilant helped:
"Basavaraj Ullagaddi is hardworking, vigilant, aware and a keen observer of the successful farmers around him. There are several farmers in his village making nothing less than Rs 02-04 lakhs on one acre of land every year. It is bread and butter, along with survival, that makes people like him strive for better living conditions. All of them are very happy in spite of owning a small fraction of land holdings. They have been diligent in maintaining their crops, lands and animal husbandry, very systematically and at the end of the day, they are all very happy", says Shivayogi R. Byakod.

A role model and source of inspiration:
Shivayogi R. Byakod, a postgraduate in Agriculture, owns the Sneha Krishi Agri Clinic & Agro Services Centre in Mahalingpur of Bagalkote district and has been a role model, source of inspiration and a guiding spirit to enthusiastic farmers of the region for more than 35 years. Basavanna: Equality, Humanity and Human Rights

Bengaluru: Akshaya Trutiya is the birthday of Lord Basaveshwara or Basavanna, the 12th-century revolutionary poet and religious reformer who rebelled against all blind beliefs, practices and rituals of Hinduism. It also goes to his credit of bringing God to one’s palms while simultaneously and vehemently opposing the tradition of visiting temples and places of pilgrimages in search of the almighty. Interestingly, unfortunately, or sadly what his followers or disciples have been doing all along would be another separate topic for discussion and better to forget for the time being. A Hindu Protestant: Dr Godwin Shiri, former Director of Christian Institute For The Study Of Religion And Society (CISRS), Bengaluru, during an informal interaction, opined-“Basavanna can be aptly described as a Hindu Protestant as he was in the forefront of opposing blind beliefs”. Influenced by Buddha: Mallikarjun G Kelagade, former Director of the Department of Information and Public Relations (DIPR) kee...

Dharwad's Arya Durga, Rukmini and Saraswati...: From Nothing to Crores and Crores...

Bengaluru: Arya Durga Kirani Stores, with Rukmini and Saraswati outlets, are household names for all those residing in and natives of Dharwad. It was a humble and austere beginning, dating back a few decades, thanks to hard work, sincerity, and trustworthy behaviour with customers, the business flourished and grew in leaps and bounds in an unimaginable proportion. Started working at the age of eight years! The owner, late Gajanan Vitthal Shetti, was primarily from Ankola in the North Canara (Karwar) district. Ankola, a coastal town, is renowned for its Salt Satyagraha during the freedom struggle movement. The financial condition of Shetti's family was too critical, making it too difficult to meet even the basic demands of day-to-day life. He began working at a ration shop while he was only eight years of age and continued working until he became 15 years old. Mahalakshmi Hotel boomerangs: Then Gajanan Vitthal Shetti came to Hubballi to do business. He came with his father, Vitth...
