Gurunath Mujumdar Bags Gold Medal in Sangeet Alankar

Bengaluru:
Gurunath Gundopant Mujumdar has added another accomplishment in his musical journey by bagging the Gold medal in Sangeet Alankar (MA Music) from Maha Gujarat Sangeet Samiti. He has been a Hindustani music practitioner for decades and has been adding academic accolades on the way, while the recent coveted one is another feather in his cap.

Quality and Energy management consultant: He has been functioning as a power Quality and Energy management consultant. He is presently associated with the Engineering MNC Schneider Electric India Private Limited as Deputy General Manager (Business Development) for the South Gujarat region, and will be moving out from Schneider Electric by 10 January 2026. Earlier, he served another giant engineering company. ABB Ltd. A Diploma holder in Electronics and Communication Engineering from Karnataka, he has been in Gujarat for more than two decades, migrating to Surat in 2002.

Latest programs:
Despite being engaged in a responsible and challenging position, Gurunath Mujumdar makes time for himself to pursue his zeal for surging ahead in the path of Hindustani classical vocal music. His latest programs include:

* Pandit Rasiklal Andhariya Jayanti program at Vadodara
* Pandit Mahadevbhai Shastry Sangeet Samaroh Surat
* Kalyan, that program by Pranav Parijat Trust and Maha Gujarat Sangeet Sameeti.

A well-known name among music lovers: Gurunath Gundopant Mujumdar is a well-known name among music lovers of Surat and, more so, in the state of Gujarat. Although his surname looks like a typical Gujarati one, he is more so by domicile. In fact, he is a native of Badami, hitherto the capital of the Chalukyan Empire, now in the present Bagalkot district of Karnataka.

Into music from the age of five: Gurunath Mujumdar’s inception into music began at the tender age of five years old. His musical journey began with singing devotional songs. Interestingly, his interest, grooming, passion, and lineage toward classical music have a family connection.

Good singers in the family: From his maternal family side, his mother, maternal aunts, uncles, and even his grandmother are very good singers of devotional songs. However, the death anniversary function of Panchakshari Gawai held at Raichur in 1987 became the turning point for Gurunath Mujumdar. He attended the musical event along with his maternal uncle and felt a strong pull toward the classical form of music.

Three years for swar shuddhi: It was during his college days that he came in touch with Shivalingayya Jalihal, the music guru at Badami, and thus began the musical journey. In this way, Gurunath Mujumdar’s sojourn commenced at Badami for a period of three years (1992-94). But he confesses-“These three years were devoted only to swar shuddhi and able to understand various ragas”.

No count of concerts attended:
In the meantime, he attended innumerable concerts to quench his thirst, trying to understand classical music and hasn’t kept a count of the same. Later on, for almost 14 years, he kept on travelling to Punjab, Gujarat, and Maharashtra, striving for personal and professional accomplishments. He got married in 2001.

Again, tutelage from 2008: Thanks to his marriage and decision to settle down in Surat, he was once again reminded about his journey in classical music. Once again from the basics, Gurunath Mujumdar started learning under Guru Ganshyambhai Gandhi in 2008. This exercise went on for seven years in trying to acquire knowledge of various Ragas, and in between, he also completed the Sangeet Visharad (Graduation in Music) from the Maha Gujarat Sangeet Samithi.

For eight years in Guru-Shishya tradition:
In 2014, he humbly submits-“Pandit Sunilbhai Modi, a prominent Musicologist from Surat, accepted me as his disciple and since then have been learning music from him for almost eight years in the Guru-Shishya tradition”.

Learning Ragas continue to remain ongoing: Apart from learning various Ragas and major learning from Guru Pandit Sunil Modi, studies on the intricacies of Khayal Gayaki, Alaap Therav, Kan, Sparsh, Meenda, Sooth, Ghasseth, Khatka and Murki, Ahirbhav, Tirobhava, Gamak, and Pukar continue to remain ongoing.

Two hours of practice every day:
Gurunath Mujumdar has been religiously practising Khayal Gayaki for two hours in the morning every day with one Bada Khayal and Drut Bandish. Although his Guru teaches him in the Gwalior style, he prefers to learn both the Gwalior and Kirana Gharana styles. He admits, “As by birth I belong to the land of Kirana Gharana, I have strong likings for Kirana Gharana Gayaki”.

Music has made me humble: He submits, “Music makes me humble in nature. Whatever I may feel like having learned today, there is definitely a great possibility of improvising the same the next day. I have been practising Bhairav and Yaman for the last two years. But whenever I start to practice in the morning, get a feeling that it is different from the previous day. This is nothing unusual as has been evinced even from the tallest of musical exponents”.

Music concerts:
He has been functioning as a Core Committee Member of the Maha Gujarat Sangeet Samithi, apart from being the General Secretary of the Karnataka Sangha in Surat. He gave a concert recently at the 75th-anniversary celebrations of the Kannada Sangha in Ahmadabad. The number of concerts he has given so far may become a big list.

Some of the major ones include the following:

Pandit Omkarnath Thakur Sangeet Sabha, organised by Gujarat Sangeet Samithi
Rastreeya Kala Kendra Surat.
Guru Raghavendra Swami math Chinchwad, Pune 2016.
Guru Raghavendra Swami Aradhana Sahakarnagar, Bengaluru.

When Punjab Chief Minister's Son Was Paraded On Underwear

Year, 1959, Place Amritsar. Some Indian Army Officers & their wives went to the Railway Station to see off one of their colleagues. Some goons made lewd remarks against the women & tried to molest them. The Army Officers chased the goons who took shelter in a nearby Cinema Theatre. The matter was reported to Commanding Officer Col Jyothi Mohan Sen. On learning about the incident, the Col ordered the Cinema Hall to be surrounded by troops. All the goons were dragged out, the leader of the goons was so heady and drunk with power; he was none other than the son of Chief Minister of Punjab, Pratap Singh Kairon, a close associate of the then PM, Jawahar Lal Nehru. All the goons were stripped to their underwear, paraded in the streets of Amritsar & later interned in the Cantonment. The next day, the Chief Minister became furious & tried to release his son from Indian Army's incarceration. Do you know what happened? His vehicle was not allowed to go into the Cantonment a...

Basavanna: Equality, Humanity and Human Rights

Bengaluru: Akshaya Trutiya is the birthday of Lord Basaveshwara or Basavanna, the 12th-century revolutionary poet and religious reformer who rebelled against all blind beliefs, practices and rituals of Hinduism. It also goes to his credit of bringing God to one’s palms while simultaneously and vehemently opposing the tradition of visiting temples and places of pilgrimages in search of the almighty. Interestingly, unfortunately, or sadly what his followers or disciples have been doing all along would be another separate topic for discussion and better to forget for the time being. A Hindu Protestant: Dr Godwin Shiri, former Director of Christian Institute For The Study Of Religion And Society (CISRS), Bengaluru, during an informal interaction, opined-“Basavanna can be aptly described as a Hindu Protestant as he was in the forefront of opposing blind beliefs”. Influenced by Buddha: Mallikarjun G Kelagade, former Director of the Department of Information and Public Relations (DIPR) kee...

Dharwad's Arya Durga, Rukmini and Saraswati...: From Nothing to Crores and Crores...

Bengaluru: Arya Durga Kirani Stores, with Rukmini and Saraswati outlets, are household names for all those residing in and natives of Dharwad. It was a humble and austere beginning, dating back a few decades, thanks to hard work, sincerity, and trustworthy behaviour with customers, the business flourished and grew in leaps and bounds in an unimaginable proportion. Started working at the age of eight years! The owner, late Gajanan Vitthal Shetti, was primarily from Ankola in the North Canara (Karwar) district. Ankola, a coastal town, is renowned for its Salt Satyagraha during the freedom struggle movement. The financial condition of Shetti's family was too critical, making it too difficult to meet even the basic demands of day-to-day life. He began working at a ration shop while he was only eight years of age and continued working until he became 15 years old. Mahalakshmi Hotel boomerangs: Then Gajanan Vitthal Shetti came to Hubballi to do business. He came with his father, Vitth...
