Udupas Hospitality: A Legacy of Excellence and Inspiration

Bengaluru:
Udupas has been shaping memorable experiences since 1980. With over four decades of expertise, the company has evolved into a trusted name in hospitality, infrastructure, and event planning services. From weddings and receptions to corporate functions and large-scale exhibitions, Udupas has built a remarkable legacy rooted in quality, consistency, and client satisfaction. An Informal Chat with Vinod Joseph, CEO of Udupas Hospitality

Q: Tell us about Udupas Hospitality as a brand.

Vinod Joseph: While Udupas Hospitality, as a formal brand, has been active in the market for the past one and a half years, the legacy of the Udupas name spans over 45 years. From humble beginnings, the company has evolved into a respected and established enterprise — a true inspiration for aspiring entrepreneurs and young professionals. Today, under the dynamic leadership of our Managing Director, Arjun, the brand continues to innovate and expand while staying true to its roots in quality and service.

Q: Who are the driving forces behind Udupa's success?

Vinod Joseph: The company owes its success to the vision and leadership of  Vasudev Udupa and  Ashok Udupa. They are the backbone of the organisation. Their commitment has taken Udupas beyond Bengaluru and Karnataka — making it a recognised name across India.

Q: What makes the Udupa brothers stand out?

Vinod Joseph: Their story is nothing short of inspiring. They’ve built not just a business, but a livelihood for many. Numerous families today depend on the ecosystem they’ve created. Young entrepreneurs can learn a lot from their journey of building something meaningful for the community.

Q: How has Udupas performed in the events segment?

Vinod Joseph: Udupas is considered a leader in event management, especially in Bengaluru. Our venue, Chamra Vajra, is one of the most sought-after locations in the city. It’s an honour to be the hospitality partner for numerous high-profile events across segments.

Q: What challenges do you face in the hospitality industry?

Vinod Joseph: Client management is a major focus. We provide end-to-end solutions — from catering to full-scale event execution. We ensure seamless communication, continuous feedback, and top-notch delivery, maintaining the highest standards of quality.

Q: What is your approach to catering?

Vinod Joseph: We have a dedicated catering team focused on quality, consistency, and taste. Though we’re a compact team of 12, we scale efficiently by deploying additional personnel as needed. We also collaborate with trusted external caterers, but our core philosophy remains unchanged: good food is our priority.

Q: How many people are indirectly supported through your operations?

Vinod Joseph: A single traditional banana leaf meal service can involve 40–500 people — including servers, kitchen staff, and cleaning crews. The cleaning team, often overlooked, plays a critical role in the success of every event. Their welfare is crucial to our operations.

Q: What’s your pricing model?

Vinod Joseph: We’re flexible and budget-friendly. Pricing depends entirely on the client’s specifications. Whether someone has a high budget or a limit of ₹900 per person, our goal remains the same — to deliver the best possible food and service, without compromising on quality.

Q: How many venues are you currently associated with in Bengaluru?

Vinod Joseph: We’re tied up with around 20 to 25 venues across Bengaluru. These partnerships include full-service offerings — catering, décor, and space management. We also cater to the corporate sector.

Q: What about your operations outside Bengaluru?

Vinod Joseph: We’ve managed several large-scale events outside the city. One of our most significant achievements was managing the Hampi Utsav in Hospet, where we served meals to over 4.5 lakh people. We are also exploring other parts of India — our dream is to take our signature South Indian banana leaf meal to cities like Delhi, Mumbai, etc and even internationally.

Q: Can you share any figures related to turnover?

Vinod Joseph: Right now, our focus isn't on numbers. Our priority is to build a reputation based on quality and trust. We want Udupas Hospitality to be synonymous with excellence in food and service.

When Punjab Chief Minister's Son Was Paraded On Underwear

All the goons were dragged out, the leader of the goons was so heady and drunk with power; he was none other than the son of Chief Minister of Punjab, Pratap Singh Kairon, a close associate of the then PM, Jawahar Lal Nehru. All the goons were stripped to their underwear, paraded in the streets of Amritsar & later interned in the Cantonment. Basavanna: Equality, Humanity and Human Rights

Bengaluru: Akshaya Trutiya is the birthday of Lord Basaveshwara or Basavanna, the 12th-century revolutionary poet and religious reformer who rebelled against all blind beliefs, practices and rituals of Hinduism. It also goes to his credit of bringing God to one’s palms while simultaneously and vehemently opposing the tradition of visiting temples and places of pilgrimages in search of the almighty. Interestingly, unfortunately, or sadly what his followers or disciples have been doing all along would be another separate topic for discussion and better to forget for the time being. A Hindu Protestant: Dr Godwin Shiri, former Director of Christian Institute For The Study Of Religion And Society (CISRS), Bengaluru, during an informal interaction, opined-“Basavanna can be aptly described as a Hindu Protestant as he was in the forefront of opposing blind beliefs”. Influenced by Buddha: Mallikarjun G Kelagade, former Director of the Department of Information and Public Relations (DIPR) kee...

Dharwad's Arya Durga, Rukmini and Saraswati...: From Nothing to Crores and Crores...

Bengaluru: Arya Durga Kirani Stores, with Rukmini and Saraswati outlets, are household names for all those residing in and natives of Dharwad. It was a humble and austere beginning, dating back a few decades, thanks to hard work, sincerity, and trustworthy behaviour with customers, the business flourished and grew in leaps and bounds in an unimaginable proportion. Started working at the age of eight years! The owner, late Gajanan Vitthal Shetti, was primarily from Ankola in the North Canara (Karwar) district. Ankola, a coastal town, is renowned for its Salt Satyagraha during the freedom struggle movement. The financial condition of Shetti's family was too critical, making it too difficult to meet even the basic demands of day-to-day life. He began working at a ration shop while he was only eight years of age and continued working until he became 15 years old. Mahalakshmi Hotel boomerangs: Then Gajanan Vitthal Shetti came to Hubballi to do business. He came with his father, Vitth...
