Karnataka: 16 Disqualified INC-JDS MLAs’ get entry to BJP, but what about victory in 05 December bye-polls?

A ll the 17 Indian National Congress(INC) and Janata Dal-Secular(JD-S) Members of state Assembly but for R Roshan Baig(former Shivajinagar Congress MLA) have formally joined the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party(BJP) on 14 November and have also been gifted with the saffron party tickets to contest the ensuing 05 December bye-polls. But now the moot point haunting the ruling party top brass is: Forget most of them, whether at least a handful of them will be able to emerge victorious? There are multiple reasons and doubts for such a feeling to pervade among all those who matter in the corridors of power under the present dispensation. Probably it’s a strange situation the ruling party has come across wherein it needs to register victory at least in eight out of the 15 constituencies to retain a simple majority. The interesting noteworthy feature and paradoxical turn of circumstances this time around is that the ruling BJP must first win over its own party cadres and leaders much before it

Karnataka disqualified MLAs' heave a sigh of relief following SC verdict

A ll the disqualified 14 Indian National Congress(INC) and three Janata Dal-Secular(JD-S) Members of Karnataka Assembly today heaved a sigh of relief following the apex court's orders of permitting them to contest the 05 December bye-elections. The Supreme Court's verdict upholding the former state Assembly Speaker's ruling of disqualifying them from the membership of the state Assembly has come as a blessing in disguise to all the 17 legislators. Although the highest court of the country has minced no words in ratifying the decision of Speaker KR Rameshkumar, at the same time it has been gracious enough in allowing the disqualified legislators to recontest the bye-elections.By nullifying the ruling of the Speaker barring these 17 legislators to contest elections till the end of the tenure of the present Assembly, the apex court has given a rebirth to the political innings of these former MLAs'. Now that the desks have been cleared for their contest it's on

Karnataka: BSY gets a reprieve as HDK offers olive leaf?

T he BS Yediurappa led Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) state government has enough reasons to heave a sigh of relief following an olive leaf offered by HD Kumaraswamy, former chief minister and state Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S) party president. HD Kumaraswamy recently announced: Siddaramaiah, former chief minister and Congress Legislature Party (CLP) may be in a hurry to topple this government and go for elections. But I will not allow that to happen…The sudden and unexpected move by the self-proclaimed regional peasants outfit otherwise dubbed as father and sons, now grandsons’ party by detractors is not out of any special love and affection for the saffron party or its chief minister but for a well-orchestrated political strategy to exist and thrive. Of late the Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S) legislature party is a divided house and has internally led into multiple diverse factions. Three legislators including H Vishwanath (represented Hunsuru constituency in Mysuru district) former state par

Karnataka: 100 days of uneasiness, embarrassment and humiliation of BS Yediyurappa

The BS Yediyurappa led Bharatiya Janata Party(BJP) government in the state has managed to complete 100 days in office despite several hurdles all along the way.Looking back at those 100 days will not pave way for a pleasant memory either to partymen nor the onlookers. In fact, from day one itself, the saffron party's mass leader is embroiled into several instances of uneasiness, embarrassment and humiliation! For being the legislative party leader by the virtue of also being the opposition leader there was no necessity for the then party in the opposition benches to reelect him again as the floor leader to be sworn in as the new chief minister. As expected BS Yediyurappa took the oath of office and secrecy as the new chief minister after the HD Kumaraswamy led Janata Dal-Secular(JD-S)-Indian National Congress(INC) alliance government failed to prove its majority in the state Assembly Such a change over was made possible, thanks to the resignation of 14 Congress and three

Karnataka Congress in upbeat mood following DK Shivakumar's release

Doddalahalli Kempegowda Shivakumar popularly referred as DKShi is back in town after spending 50 days in police lock up and Tihar jail in New Delhi. Thanks to his release following a bail from the Delhi high court, the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee(KPCC) for public consumption is in upbeat mood while his detractors within the party continue to remain sore over the development. DK Shivakumar, Man Friday of the All India Congress Committee(AICC), former Power Minister in the short lived HD Kumaraswamy led Janata Dal-Secular(JD-S) Indian National Congress(INC) supported alliance government is on the cross roads of his political career now due to the drilling by Enforcement Directorate(ED) officials over money laundering cases. During deliberations in the state Assembly over the crucial trial of strength of BS Yediyurappa led Bharatiya Janata Party(BJP) government a couple of months back, he himself had expressed apprehension about his imminent arrest sooner or later. He had

Karnataka farmers agitate for Mahadayi waters while BSY assures Krishna waters to Maharashtra!

BS Yediyurappa , Karnataka Chief Minister today stirred a hornet's nest while addressing a Bharatiya Janata Party-Shivsena electoral campaign public meeting at Jatta town belonging to Solapur district in Maharashtra. The lone saffron party mass leader of the neighbouring state gave a clarion call to Kannadigas settled in the bordering districts to vote for the Shivsena candidate in the ensuing Maharashtra Assembly elections to ensure fulfilment of their long-standing demands including release of Krishna River waters from the Alamatti dam of Vijayapura district.Perhaps it was a magnanimous gesture for a chief minister of an adjoining state to declare the release of water for the parched areas of Solapur district. But the timing proved to be unwise. The farmers of North Karnataka, including hundreds of women clad in green sarees, have descended in Bengaluru this morning to press for their age-old demand of release of Mahadayi River waters to regions of Belagavi, Dharwad and Gada

BS Yediyurappa: Roaring tiger turned puppet!

Bookanakere Siddalingappa Yediyurappa has accomplished his dream of becoming the state Chief Minister for the fourth time. However, during the turn of events over a period of time and within two months after taking over the reins he looks to have been mellowed down to a great extent which is in quite contrast to his personal and political personality so far. image : patrika.com This transformation apart from amazing his admirers and shocking the followers is not a big surprise to his detractors within the ruling party who continue to gun him down at every possible opportunity! In spite of being the sole unquestionable mass leader of the saffron party irrespective of caste and creed, he continues to be projected as a Lingayat strong man in some sections of the media to restrict him to one particular community.Interestingly many contenders have cropped up to the pivotal CM post as soon as he is relieved to be packed up to a gubernatorial position none of these aspirants boast of ma

Karnataka: Street fight for BJP ticket begins...

T hanks to the announcement of the calendar of events for by-elections to the 15 Assembly constituencies in the state the street fight for bagging the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party(BJP) tickets is also on a new high now! Rajarajeshwarinagar in Bengaluru Urban and Ranebennur in Haveri districts should have also gone for similar by-elections simultaneously as the MLAs' of these constituencies have tendered resignations to these seats.  The defeated Bharatiya Janata Party(BJP) rivals have contested these elections, so the election commission has set aside the decision of holding elections in these two places. Elsewhere the battle by the erstwhile Indian National Congress(INC) and Janata Dal-Secular(JD-S) legislators' for bagging the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party(BJP) tickets is on. In some constituencies, there has been stiff opposition from defeated BJP candidates for parting away from the saffron party ticket to the new entrants.  Sharat Bachhegowda, son of

Karnataka's 17 disqualified MLAs' on the crossroads now!

T hanks to Yesterday's announcement of bye-elections to the 15 out of the 17 Assembly constituencies in the state, all those former legislators who quit their memberships' to enable the saffron party to come to power are now literally on the crossroads! Their plea for quashing the state Assembly Speaker's ruling disqualifying them from their memberships and barring them to recontest before the end of the present Assembly's tenure till 2022 is pending before the apex court. The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear their petition tomorrow after several adjournments. But the calendar of events for the bye-elections has been declared and as per the Speaker's ruling, they have no eligibility to contest the ensuing by-elections. 14 Indian National Congress(INC) and three Janata Dal-Secular(JD-S) Members of Legislative Assembly who quit their positions have been undergoing a harrowing time ever since they resigned. All these legislators submitted their resignations

Karnataka: Government, Party and CM change but pathetic plight of floodwaters victims worsens further!

I t's exactly 56 days since the BS Yediyurappa led Bharatiya Janata Party(BJP) government came into existence but the plight of tens of thousands of floodwater victims in the Northern districts continues to worsen with no indications of the situation changing for better. The devastation due to incessant heavy rains is not limited to the Northern Karnataka alone. Many districts of the old Mysuru, Coastal and Malnad region have also experienced the fury of rain God in the worst possible manner. But succour to the people in distress continues to elude like a distant mirage. Interestingly and unfortunately this happens to be a sad state of affairs in spite of the same party government, both at the state level as well as in the centre. The state Bharatiya Janata Party(BJP) had all along been propagating for the same party governments at the state and centre. Such drum beating was no less during the previous general elections to the state Assembly during May 2018 polls. In spite of

DKShi issue becomes a weapon for INC-JDS to hammer BJP

M assive protest rally by the Vokkaliga organisations in association with Janata Dal-Secular(JD-S), Indian National Congress(INC) and several pro-Kannada organizations to protest against the arrest of DK Shivakumar , Man Friday of the Congress party emerged to be a big success considering the huge turnout. The event also transformed into a platform for everyone present to hurl all sorts of abuses against the Bharatiya Janata Party(BJP) led National Democratic Alliance(NDA) government in the centre in general and Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amith Shah in particular. All along the 5.2 kilometres route of the 'Raj Bhavan Chalo' from the National College grounds in Basavanagudi to the Freedom Park near Anandrao Circle the protesters raised slogans against the Union Government, PM and the Home Minister. The speakers appeared to be more interested in making sweeping remarks against the BJP governments in the state and Centre by accusing both of them indulgi

Karnataka BJP's first president AK Subbaiah passes away

V eteran politician Ajjikutteera Kariyappa Subbaiah passed away here today at a private hospital. He was 83 years old. Photo : Deccan Herald He was the first president of the state Bharatiya Janata Party and during his stint as a Member of the state Legislative Council had become a nightmare for the R Gundurao led Congress party government in the state during the early eighties. He had exposed many a corruption scandal of the ministers in the Congress ministry and was responsible for the resignation of many ministers. AK Subbaiah was well-known for his firebrand speeches unleashing terror in the minds of corrupt Congressmen of his time.At a juncture when AB Vajpayee was regarded as Akhil Bharatiya Vajpayee so was AK Subbaiah as Akhil Karnataka Subbaiah. Thanks to his terrific homework in unravelling the hidden undercover deals of those in power, he was responsible for taking the saffron party to a new high in the minds of the people and had almost become a household name acro

Karnataka BJP's differences come into open

( Photo:ANI ) N alin Kumar Kateel , three times Member of Parliament from South Canara(Mangaluru) Lok Sabha constituency took over as the new president of the state Bharatiya Janata Party this morning at the party office Bengaluru. BS Yediyurappa outgoing president and Chief Minister handed over the mantle by transferring the party flag and wishing him a fruitful tenure. He also felicitated the new president with a gorgeous silk shawl, traditional garland and a memento. No doubt it was a joyous occasion and celebration for the new president as he had restricted himself as a leader of the coastal belt of South Canara and Udupi districts so far by his fiery and equally controversial speeches. However, it's altogether sweet and sour feeling for the average party workers' who continue to remain the backbone of the party. 17 new ministers were sworn in only a week back but for some of them, it wasn't any important function to attend. R Ashoka, Revenue Minister and former D

Karnataka BJP's public image takes a severe beating

T he BS Yediyurappa led one-month-old Bharatiya Janata Party government is in the news these days for all the wrong reasons. The party's public image no doubt has taken a back seat following such piquant situation! For whatsoever reasons warranting such an adverse situation, the ordinary workers, sympathisers and leaders appear to be undergoing an uneasy calm as a fallout of such a plight. Interestingly or rather hopelessly, this strange turnabout of things has taken shape since the very day BS Yediyurappa was sworn in as the Chief Minister on 26 July 2019. Although he took over the oath of office and secrecy on 26 July, he had to wait till 20 August for getting a nod to expand his lone member cabinet! And till that period he went on touring the flood-affected areas all alone in the capacity of a CM without any members in his cabinet. This plight was enough for the opposition Indian National Congress(INC) and Janata-Dal Secular(JD-S) leaders to have a dig now and then at the f

Arun Jaitley's contribution to BJP's growth in Karnataka

ImageSource:  indiatoday.in A run Jaitley , former Union Minister who passed away this afternoon in the capital after a prolonged illness had maintained close ties with the people of Karnataka much before he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party(BJP) and had remained in constant touch with several party leaders from across the state till the end. He was closely associated with M Rama Jois, former Supreme Court judge who hails from the state. Thanks to his expertise on varied subjects like law, finance, corporate affairs among many others he was a frequent visitor to the state and more so to the Bengaluru city for delivering special lectures.During his innumerable visits to the city, he gave special talks on many crucial law issues like the vexed Ayodhya dispute, Uniform Civil Code, Article 370, corporate affairs at the Bengaluru Advocates Association, party fora like workers, legislators' and public meetings. But a beginning of life long relationship with the state started o

Sushma Swaraj: Ballari loses her daughter

Sushma Swaraj's relations and personal equations with the people of Ballari district in Karnataka were unique in multiple ways, to such an extent that now a feeling persists in their minds as though they have lost their daughter in the passing away of Ms Swaraj! The former Union External Affairs Minister developed a close rapport with the people of Ballari district, notoriously known for the mining mafia and destruction of natural resources, during the late nineties. She came down to Ballari, way back during the fag end of 1999 to take head-on Sonia Gandhi in the Parliamentary polls. Interestingly, Sonia Gandhi had filed her nomination papers from Ballari Lok Sabha constituency apart from Raybareli, the family's traditional bastion in Uttar Pradesh. Ballari district, ever since the country gained independence had transformed itself into a fortress of the Indian National Congress(INC) party. This taken for a granted fact was so much omnipotent that Congressmen used to joke
