Karnataka:Two Independent MLAs' join JDS-INC government

R Shankar and H Nagesh , both Independent members of state Legislative Assembly were today inducted into the state ministry as cabinet ministers in the HD Kumaraswamy led Janata Dal-Secular(JDS)-Indian National Congress(INC) alliance government. By this move, the leaders of the coalition parties have been successful in ensuring both the Independent legislators from crossing over to the 105 members strong main opposition party, Bharatiya Janata Party. It's no public secret that the saffron party leaders of the state have stumbled a handful of times in trying to install a government of their own.The BJP needs at least 113 members in a house of 224 to form a government but lady luck has been shying ever since the new Assembly was constituted after the May 2018 general elections. R Shankar in fact won on a Karnataka Prajakeeya Janata Party(KPJP) ticket from Ranebennur constituency in Haveri district. The party launched by Upendra, the maverick Kannada actor and film maker drew a bl

Karnataka's JDS-INC alliance government completes first anniversary

T he HD Kumaraswamy led Janata Dal-Secular(JDS) and Indian National Congress(INC) supported coalition state government will be completing one year in office tomorrow, but whether the power partners will celebrate the same or end up licking their wounds depends upon the Lok Sabha poll results tomorrow. Although a BS Yeddyurappa led Bharatiya Janata Party government came into being soon after the May 2018 Assembly elections the party was deprived with the required numerical strength of 113 for a slender majority in a house of 224 members. Then the saffron party could only boast of 104 members of its own while the Indian National Congress(INC) had a representation of 80 and the Janata Dal-Secular(JDS) 38. Two Independents after dilly-dallying switched over to the JDS-INC combine. As expected BS Yeddyurappa after failing to realise the required numbers had to bow down and announced his resignation on the floor of the house without pressing his motion for proving the majority of his gove

Countdown for Karnataka JDS-INC government begins

T he HD Kumaraswamy led Janata Dal Secular-Congress coalition government which had been literally walking on a tight rope ever since it came to power in May 2018 now appears to be on the death bed, thanks to the exit polls indicating a National Democratic Alliance(NDA) government romping back at the Center. In fact the outcome of the Lok Sabha elections in the state according to the pollsters is no good news either to the sworn enemies turned partners for power. It has been projected that the Bharatiya Janata Party, currently the main opposition party is likely to emerge victorious in about 16-23 constituencies out of the total number of 28 seats. Indian National Congress(INC) is being told to win in 6-8 and the Janata Dal Secular(JDS) in 1-2 seats, and such survey results much before the formal process of counting of votes has rattled both the ruling party leaders. HD Kumaraswamy, Chief Minister who was scheduled to be in New Delhi to be part of the opposition protest has suddenly ca

CK Jaffer Shariff Congress loses its prominent Muslim face in Karnataka

CK Jaffer Shariff Congress loses its prominent Muslim face in Karnataka Challakere Abdul Kareem Jaffer Shariff was an embodiment of the proverb: Small is beautiful. A relatively dwarf personality by physical stature but made it big on the national politics in general and in a dominant manner on the home turf of Karnataka. But no one disputes the fact of a prominent face of the Congress in the state being withered away with the demise of CK Jaffer Shariff. Unfortunately the former Union Minister’s death went unnoticed in the mainstream media as MH Ambareesh, another former union minister and popular Kannada film personality also passed away the very same day. In fact the local vernacular TV channels beamed live the developments related to the actor’s death and funeral day in and day out but chose to ignore a political leader who had immensely contributed to the state and nation. CKJS’s meteoric rise in politics is typical to the rags and riches stories. He hailed from a

JDS-Congress government:Six months of confusion and chaos

JDS-Congress government:Six months of confusion and chaos The HD Kumaraswamy led Janata Dal Secular-Congress alliance state government has managed to complete six months in office with enough dosage of hardships all along the way and most of the major promises unfulfilled. As a token of gratitude to the people of Mandya district the Chief Minister launched developmental projects to the tune of Rs 718 crores at Melukote, the historic vaishnavaite pilgrimage centre. The huge quantum of monetary assistance to any single district is the highest so far after the sworn enemies turned close friends assumed office on this day six months back. It may be recalled here that the ruling Janata Dal Secular party triumphed in Mandya district bagging all the eight Assembly constituencies in the May 2018 general elections. The party also retained the Mandya Lok Sabha constituency in the recently held bye elections. HD Kumaraswamy had embarrassing moments today as a farmer belonging to Mandya district co

HD Kumaraswamy continues to keep media at 'safe distance'

HD Kumaraswamy continues to keep media at 'safe distance'          HD Kumaraswamy, the Janata Dal Secular-Congress alliance state Chief Minister looks to have taken a complete U turn about his public stance and utterances on the functioning of media and that too within a short span of six months after taking over the reigns.Today he declared in a government function:Henceforth I shall not issue any press statements... The chief minister seems to be annoyed over the media criticism on his three diverse views within a short time frame of three hours. The dubious change of opinion in such childish fashion only further undermined the sanctity of the  constitutional position he holds. It so happened that just two days back Jayashree, a woman farmer and part of a unruly peasants group which barged into the premises of Suvarna Soudha on the outskirts of Belagavi aired her anger against the present CM.She blasted him for not making arrangements to pay dues to the sugarcane grow

JDS-INC candidates register new records in electoral history

JDS-INC candidates register new records in electoral history The recent bye elections held on 3 November to three Lok Sabha and two Assembly constituencies which were projected to be an acid test to both,Janata Dal Secular(JDS) and the Indian National Congress(INC),ruling partners of the state government have proved otherwise in the results announced today. Both,Mandya Lok Sabha constituency in Mandya district and Ramanagar Assembly constituency in adjoining Ramanagar district in the old Mysuru region have gone to the Janata Dal Secular candidates as expected. But Ballari Lok Sabha constituency in Hyderabad Karnataka region and Jamakhandi Assembly of Bagalkote district in Mumbai Karnataka area have gone the Congress way thus giving the main opposition party,Bharatiya Janata Party a big jolt. The face saving factor to the BJP remained in BY Raghavendra of the party in retaining Shivamogga Lok Sabha constituency in the Malnad region where he trounced Madhu Bangarappa, the combined

Candidate managing to garner more sympathy likely winner in Jamkhandi Assembly constituency! Jamkhandi Assembly constituency in Bagalkote district coming under the purview of Mumbai Karnataka region is again gearing up for the bye polls scheduled on coming 3 November. The elections are necessitated following the untimely tragic demise of Siddu Bhimappa Nyamgouda, sitting Congress MLA. Anand Nyamgouda, son of late Siddu Nyamagouda is now the Congress candidate and it goes without saying that the party wants to capitalize the sympathy factor arising out of the accidental death of the legislator. The deceased MLA's son is no novice to politics as it has been him behind the scenes nursing the constituency on behalf of his father. Late Siddu Nyamagouda, apart from his party affiliations was well respected by the people and more so among the farming community. It goes to his credit of building the Shrama Bindu Sagar, popularly known as the Chikkapadasalgi barrage across river Krishna

B Sriramulu has an uphill task to ensure his sister's victory in Ballari Lok Sabha constituency Ballari Lok Sabha constituency in Karnataka is again poised for another bye elections on 3 November and this time around its no cake walk to B Sriramulu,BJP strong man of the   district. In   fact the vacancy has taken place following his resignation to this Lok Sabha seat.He was elected from the Molakalmuru ST Reserve Assembly constituency in the previous general elections. Former one time Ballari MP  and B Sriramulu's sister J Shanta  is once again the BJP candidate here. She is more known as B Sriramulu's sister rather than carving a niche for herself in the political and public circles. But any way she is considered as a local person in comparison to her Congress rival VS Ugrappa, presently MLC. The iron ore rich district had been in the news for all the wrong reasons for a pretty prolonged period of time. Thanks to excessive illegal mining operations of G Janardhana Redd

Shivamogga LS constituency awaits a royal battle;Sons' of three former CM's into the fray Shivamogga Lok Sabha constituency in Karnataka is witnessing an unusual tussle for the ensuing bye elections scheduled on 3 November.Irrespective of whoever making it through in the polls considered to be semi finals for the forthcoming general elections during 2019 the tenure is short lived and at the most not more than six months. The bye elections now a bone of contention between the main opposition Bharatiya Janata Party and two strange bed mates on power sharing seat,Janata Dal Secular and Indian National Congress was necessitated following the resignation of BS Yeddyurappa to the Lok Sabha constituency. He quit it following his election to the state Assembly from Shikaripura constituency in the same district. Kodagu craves for SOS to avert relapse of calamities in near future

Kodagu craves for SOS to avert relapse of calamities in near future               The onslaught of heavy downpour, water blasts, landslips, landslides and severe damage to properties including houses and coffee estates and fatal casualties in the form of human beings and domestic cattle are an eyeopener to the people of the district. At the same time they continue to pose a much dangerous threat of relapsing if immediate remedial measures are not initiated, for which the environs of the district is badly craving for. Interestingly in spite of unheard damage due to the incessant rains and the after effects of such a thing no wild animals have faced any unnatural death according to reliable reports reaching here!In fact animal-human conflict continues to remain an unattended problem in the district and people facing the brunt as a result of it keeps continuing unabated. Throughout the year there are any number of incidents in the district wherein people are attacked, kille
