Advantage BJP if Congress cadre resolves to fight out 'injustice' meted out in seat sharing

Bengaluru,14 March(HS):As expected the ruling Janata Dal Secular has literally managed to squeeze in the coalition partner Indian National Congress to agree upon eight Lok Sabha constituencies to its fold for the ensuing April Parliamentary general elections. The JDS has got eight constituencies including Tumakuru represented by SP Muddahanumegowda of the Congress.

In fact the bargaining of constituencies started with the JDS putting up a huge demand of 15 constituencies and over a period of time the number started dipping down slowly with HD Devegowda, former Prime Minister and party supremo contending that as per the 1:3 formula it should at least get 10 constituencies.

Interestingly among the seats the smaller alliance partner initially put forth claim on also included many of those currently held by the Congress much to the heartburn of many a Congressmen.Chikkaballapur now being represented by M Veerappa Moily, former Chief Minister and Mysuru having a BJP MP also were in the demand list of the JDS.

Although the top brass of the Congress party was taken aback at the 'unrealistic' demand of the junior partner,at the same time it was left with no alternative rather than managing to reach at an agreeable truce in order to keep the alliance government going.

The JDS only had two members in Lok Sabha after the 2014 elections including HD Devegowda from Hassan and CS Puttaraju from Mandya.CS Puttaraju quit his membership of Parliament after getting elected to the state Assembly during May 2018 general elections and also became a minister in the HD Kumaraswamy cabinet.

Prior to 2014 Janata Dal Secular party had three Lok Sabha members from the state. In that way the strength had reduced to two during the previous elections.Going by these numbers and what the party has bagged now to contest along with the massive support of the Congress,it goes without saying that the JDS has won a bumper lottery!

What looks amazing now is that the same party hitherto hardly mattered in some of the constituencies it is now eyeing upon to register a win.The constituencies allocated to the JDS are as follows:Uttara Kannada(Karawara),Udupi-Chikkamagaluru,Shivamogga,Tumakuru,Hassan,Mandya,Bengaluru North and Vijayapura.

Janata Dal Secular party hardly has any significance worth mentioning in the whole of North Karnataka when it comes to Lok Sabha polls. However thanks to the bargaining capacity of the Devegowda family, the party could snatch Uttara Kannada(Karawara) and Vijayapura belonging to the Northern region.

In Uttara Kannada or Karawara constituency the party candidate had polled 1.30 lakh votes during the May 2014 Parliamentary polls while the Congress candidate in spite of losing had garnered four lakh votes.

Anant Kumar Hegde,Union Minister of State for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship has represented this constituency for the fifth time after getting elected for the first time during 1996.

Likewise Tumakuru constituency was represented by SP Muddahanumegowda of the Congress party but now handed over to the JDS after seat arrangement.

Letting out the seat to the JDS party has been strongly resented by the local Congress party cadre who have hinted out of rebellion in case the high command fails to revoke its announcement made now.

KR Rajanna, former Madhugiri MLA told Hindusthan Samachar:It's a question of existence of the Congress party. We have received a communique from the AICC stating about the resolve to part away with the seat to the JDS.But another crucial meeting is slated on 16 March and we're all eagerly awaiting for a favorable decision and hope justice will prevail upon.

When insisted on his stance if the party refuses to budge KR Rajanna clarified:In that case I'll call a meeting of the party workers and hear their views before taking any decision.

On learning the announcement of HD Devegowda,JDS patriarch passing over the political mantle of Hassan Lok Sabha constituency to Prajwal Revanna, his grandson and son of HD Revanna,PWD and Power Minister KR Rajanna had remarked thus:

If Devegowda had 28 grandchildren he would have made them contest all the 28 Lok Sabha constituencies of the state and likewise had he 224 great grandchildren then he would have ensured that all of them become candidates to the state Assembly!

It may be recalled here that the vocal leader has been threatening since long to contest as a rebel leader or even go to the extent of seeking the BJP ticket to thwart the attempts of the party of handing over the constituency to the JDS.

SP Muddahanumegowda,Tumakuru Congress MP when tried to evince his reaction over the development refused to come to the land line number and has switched off both his cell numbers.Repeated attempts to get in touch didn't alter the no response situation.

Nikhil Kumaraswamy, son of HD Kumaraswamy has already been announced the JDS candidate from Mandya Lok Sabha constituency wherein Sumalatha, multilingual cine star and wife of late MH Ambareesh, former Congress minister has declared her intention of entering the electoral fray.

The Bharatiya Janata Party however is keeping all its options open with a close strategy of wait and watch. On the other hand Mandya district Congress workers are virtually on a viral campaign against the party decision and have pronounced their stance of supporting Sumalatha irrespective of the disciplinary action they may have to face.

Interestingly HD Devegowda has not announced the constituency from where he would like to contest. It's only Tumakuru and Bengaluru North left to the octogenarian leader to choose from.

Tumakuru is already under boil over the Congress party's decision and Bengaluru North currently represented by DV Sadanandgowda,Union Statistics and Programme Implementation Minister is no safe bet for HD Devegowda.According to his own claims he boasts a track record of winning 14 out of the 15 elections he has contested so far.

On the whole all these developments appear to be to the advantage of the Bharatiya Janata Party if Congress cadre sticks to its resolve of fighting it out against the 'onslaught' of the JDS on the very existence of the former.

Probably KR Rajanna is more than candid when he claims:Congress helped Devegowda to become prime minister while he ensured that the party became weakened and now the support to Kumaraswamy to become the CM will eventually end up in ruining the Congress party.

Paul Mamu becomes part of Dharwad's history

People originally from Dharwad and most of whom migrated decades ago elsewhere across the state, country and world in search of green pastures were in for a sudden shock since late evening on Monday. They all shared similar sentiments, fond moments and profound grief in the passing away of Paul Cardoza of the renowned Hotel PAUL’S at Vidyagiri. He was 69 years old and not at all an age for his generation to bid adieu. Walks to Death: Paul Cardoza was a little bit hefty for his height and age; otherwise there were no visible symptoms to hint of any ailments he had been challenged with. Even on the fateful day, he attended to the chores in the hotel until the afternoon before proceeding to neighbour Hubballi for a cardiac test. It is said that he literally walked to the health check-up facility to undergo the examination. No, he was not destinated for it as he suffered a massive stroke and never to recover! A jovial personality: In the passing away of Paul Cardoza Dharwad has lost one o
