Karnataka: Street fight for BJP ticket begins...

T hanks to the announcement of the calendar of events for by-elections to the 15 Assembly constituencies in the state the street fight for bagging the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party(BJP) tickets is also on a new high now! Rajarajeshwarinagar in Bengaluru Urban and Ranebennur in Haveri districts should have also gone for similar by-elections simultaneously as the MLAs' of these constituencies have tendered resignations to these seats.  The defeated Bharatiya Janata Party(BJP) rivals have contested these elections, so the election commission has set aside the decision of holding elections in these two places. Elsewhere the battle by the erstwhile Indian National Congress(INC) and Janata Dal-Secular(JD-S) legislators' for bagging the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party(BJP) tickets is on. In some constituencies, there has been stiff opposition from defeated BJP candidates for parting away from the saffron party ticket to the new entrants.  Sharat Bachhegowda, son of

Karnataka's 17 disqualified MLAs' on the crossroads now!

T hanks to Yesterday's announcement of bye-elections to the 15 out of the 17 Assembly constituencies in the state, all those former legislators who quit their memberships' to enable the saffron party to come to power are now literally on the crossroads! Their plea for quashing the state Assembly Speaker's ruling disqualifying them from their memberships and barring them to recontest before the end of the present Assembly's tenure till 2022 is pending before the apex court. The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear their petition tomorrow after several adjournments. But the calendar of events for the bye-elections has been declared and as per the Speaker's ruling, they have no eligibility to contest the ensuing by-elections. 14 Indian National Congress(INC) and three Janata Dal-Secular(JD-S) Members of Legislative Assembly who quit their positions have been undergoing a harrowing time ever since they resigned. All these legislators submitted their resignations

Karnataka: Government, Party and CM change but pathetic plight of floodwaters victims worsens further!

I t's exactly 56 days since the BS Yediyurappa led Bharatiya Janata Party(BJP) government came into existence but the plight of tens of thousands of floodwater victims in the Northern districts continues to worsen with no indications of the situation changing for better. The devastation due to incessant heavy rains is not limited to the Northern Karnataka alone. Many districts of the old Mysuru, Coastal and Malnad region have also experienced the fury of rain God in the worst possible manner. But succour to the people in distress continues to elude like a distant mirage. Interestingly and unfortunately this happens to be a sad state of affairs in spite of the same party government, both at the state level as well as in the centre. The state Bharatiya Janata Party(BJP) had all along been propagating for the same party governments at the state and centre. Such drum beating was no less during the previous general elections to the state Assembly during May 2018 polls. In spite of

Countdown for World renowned Mysuru Dasara

image:holidify T he name of the historic city Mysuru by itself takes one down to memory lane bringing in fond and rejoicing memories to the fore. The worldwide famous Mysuru Dasara perhaps tops all of them. Dasara is back again and the countdown for the same has already set in. Mysuru Dasara, as most of you, are well aware of is the 10 days' state festival of Karnataka state. The festivities in this connection commence with the beginning of Navratri(Nine days) culminating on the 10th day Vijayadashami. Dasara is also the commemoration of triumph of good over the evil forces. According to local legends, it was the day on which Goddess Chamundeshwari(Durga) killed the buffalo headed demon Mahishasura. The name to the historic and cultural city Mysuru is also said to be derived from the demon's name Mahishasura. The credit for observing the religious festival into a state ritual goes to the credit of Wadiyars of the royal Mysuru dynasty which was founded by Yaduraya during 1

Karnataka surges ahead in conservation of Tigers'

T he Forest Department, Government of Karnataka has all due reasons to cheer, thanks to a compiled report of the fourth cycle of All India Tiger Estimation titled "Status of Tigers Co-predators & Prey in India", the number of Tigers is increasing in recent times. image: bangaloremirror.indiatimes.com The numerical strength as per the summary report of "Status of Tigers in India-2018", the five Tiger sanctuaries in the state boast of 524 tigers which is not only the highest numbers recorded so far but just short of two to Madhya Pradesh in being numero one to the country. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while appreciating the efforts that have undergone in preparing the status report has put on record the best tools deployed for this exercise: Tiger status assessment has utilised the latest technology and the best tools for the process. According to the summary of the status report: India's national tiger assessment is the largest biodiversity surve

Karnataka Janata Dal-Secular(JD-S) facing threat of extinction?

I s   the state   Janata Dal-Secular(JD-S) regional party facing a threat of immediate disintegration to start with and ending up into extinction later?     Well, this has been a pertinent question doing rounds in the state political circles since quite a few days and as of now although the thought may appear to be a figment of imagination, the developments in the party do not dispute such a possibility sooner or later! GT Devegowda, Janata Dal-Secular(JD-S) leader who trounced Siddaramaiah at Chamundeshwari Assembly constituency in Mysuru district during the May 2018 general elections looks to be moving far away from the party fold if his outbursts against the rank and file of the party are to be taken for consideration. He has been repeatedly bashing SR Mahesh, another JD-S leader of Mysuru district. Both were ministers in the previous JDS-Congress coalition government and have fallen apart for various personal and political reasons. SR Srinivas, former minister, Gub

DKShi issue becomes a weapon for INC-JDS to hammer BJP

M assive protest rally by the Vokkaliga organisations in association with Janata Dal-Secular(JD-S), Indian National Congress(INC) and several pro-Kannada organizations to protest against the arrest of DK Shivakumar , Man Friday of the Congress party emerged to be a big success considering the huge turnout. The event also transformed into a platform for everyone present to hurl all sorts of abuses against the Bharatiya Janata Party(BJP) led National Democratic Alliance(NDA) government in the centre in general and Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amith Shah in particular. All along the 5.2 kilometres route of the 'Raj Bhavan Chalo' from the National College grounds in Basavanagudi to the Freedom Park near Anandrao Circle the protesters raised slogans against the Union Government, PM and the Home Minister. The speakers appeared to be more interested in making sweeping remarks against the BJP governments in the state and Centre by accusing both of them indulgi

DK Shivakumar: Trouble shooter now in deep trouble!

Photo: Buisness Standard D oddalahalli K empegowda Shivakumar or popularly referred to as DK Shivakumar or DKShi, former state minister and leader of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee(KPCC) looks to be in a climax stage and deep trouble of his political career now. He had been in the news earlier for trying to come to the rescue of his Congress party now and then. But in the changed circumstances he has landed up in a soup and seems to be heading for much more trouble on the way! The present embroiled turn of events is not an overnight development. He had been under the radar of the Income Tax and other tax-related departments since long and got trapped in the net only a few years back.Just like his milestones of ensuring a crumbling defeat of his political adversaries his name has been entangled with controversies and alleged scandals and scams all along. If Gali Janardhan Reddy, former Bharatiya Janata Party(BJP) minister and mining baron hitherto known for pumping in fun

Karnataka BJP's first president AK Subbaiah passes away

V eteran politician Ajjikutteera Kariyappa Subbaiah passed away here today at a private hospital. He was 83 years old. Photo : Deccan Herald He was the first president of the state Bharatiya Janata Party and during his stint as a Member of the state Legislative Council had become a nightmare for the R Gundurao led Congress party government in the state during the early eighties. He had exposed many a corruption scandal of the ministers in the Congress ministry and was responsible for the resignation of many ministers. AK Subbaiah was well-known for his firebrand speeches unleashing terror in the minds of corrupt Congressmen of his time.At a juncture when AB Vajpayee was regarded as Akhil Bharatiya Vajpayee so was AK Subbaiah as Akhil Karnataka Subbaiah. Thanks to his terrific homework in unravelling the hidden undercover deals of those in power, he was responsible for taking the saffron party to a new high in the minds of the people and had almost become a household name acro

Karnataka BJP's differences come into open

( Photo:ANI ) N alin Kumar Kateel , three times Member of Parliament from South Canara(Mangaluru) Lok Sabha constituency took over as the new president of the state Bharatiya Janata Party this morning at the party office Bengaluru. BS Yediyurappa outgoing president and Chief Minister handed over the mantle by transferring the party flag and wishing him a fruitful tenure. He also felicitated the new president with a gorgeous silk shawl, traditional garland and a memento. No doubt it was a joyous occasion and celebration for the new president as he had restricted himself as a leader of the coastal belt of South Canara and Udupi districts so far by his fiery and equally controversial speeches. However, it's altogether sweet and sour feeling for the average party workers' who continue to remain the backbone of the party. 17 new ministers were sworn in only a week back but for some of them, it wasn't any important function to attend. R Ashoka, Revenue Minister and former D

Karnataka BJP's public image takes a severe beating

T he BS Yediyurappa led one-month-old Bharatiya Janata Party government is in the news these days for all the wrong reasons. The party's public image no doubt has taken a back seat following such piquant situation! For whatsoever reasons warranting such an adverse situation, the ordinary workers, sympathisers and leaders appear to be undergoing an uneasy calm as a fallout of such a plight. Interestingly or rather hopelessly, this strange turnabout of things has taken shape since the very day BS Yediyurappa was sworn in as the Chief Minister on 26 July 2019. Although he took over the oath of office and secrecy on 26 July, he had to wait till 20 August for getting a nod to expand his lone member cabinet! And till that period he went on touring the flood-affected areas all alone in the capacity of a CM without any members in his cabinet. This plight was enough for the opposition Indian National Congress(INC) and Janata-Dal Secular(JD-S) leaders to have a dig now and then at the f

Karnataka: BJP wins floor test; Speaker quits, challenges remain

The BS Yeddyurappa led Bharatiya Janata Party state government won the vote of confidence motion by a voice vote this morning and later also sought approval for the finance bills. However, the smooth proceedings also became an eyewitness to the exit of KR Rameshkumar from the position of Assembly Speaker. Today, the much-awaited vote of confidence motion in the BJP government was approved without any hassles. Thanks to the 105 members strength of the ruling party and the opposition Indian National Congress(INC) and Janata Dal-Secular(JD-S) parties' combined strength of 99 apart from the Speaker, there was no doubt about the saffron party making it through. One Independent MLA who resigned as a minister is also supporting the BJP now. In fact, Karnataka Assembly has a total strength of 224 elected members while one person is nominated from the Anglo-Indian community. But the nominated member has no rights to vote during the crucial vote of confidence. As 14 Congress and three JD

Karnataka Speaker disqualifies 11 INC and 3 JD-S MLAs'

KR Rameshkumar, Speaker of the state Assembly today disqualified 11 Indian National Congress(INC) and Janata Dal-Secular(JD-S) members of the state Assembly with immediate effect while the disqualified legislators have described the ruling as lopsided and will contest the same in the court. The disqualified legislators are as follows: Indian National Congress(INC) 1.Prathapgouda Patil(Maski constituency in Raichur district) 2.BC Patil(Hirekerur in Haveri district) 3.Shivaram Hebbar(Yellapura in North Canara district) 4.ST Somasekhar(Yeshavantapura in Bengaluru Urban district) 5.Bhairathi A Basavaraj(KR Puram In Bengaluru Urban district) 6.Anandsingh(Vijayanagar in Ballari district) 7.R Roshan Baig(Shivajinagar in Bengaluru Urban district) 8.Muniratna(Rajarajeshwarinagar in Bengaluru Urban district) 9.Dr K Sudhakarreddy(Chikkaballapur in Chikkaballapur district) 10.MTB Nagaraj(Hoskote in Bengaluru Rural district) 11.Shrimanth Balasaheb Patil(Kagwad in Belagavi district). Karnataka: BSY may manage majority, but what about stability?

T he BS Yeddyurappa led Bharatiya Janata Party government may not find it a big problem to prove its majority on the floor of the house on Monday, July 29 July. But how long and how far it will be able to provide stability looks to be a major challenge to the party managers. Thanks to the 13 Indian National Congress(INC) and three Janata Dal-Secular(JD-S) MLAs', who have chosen to remain far away from the proceedings of the state Assembly as well as the state itself, there is no possibility of immediate danger to the BJP government. BS Yeddyurappa is also thinking of forming the cabinet after proving his majority in the state Assembly. As of now the strength of the ruling party is 105 while that of the opposition INC-JD-S is 100 including the KR Rameshkumar, Speaker. The speaker usually casts his vote when there is a tie and prefers to remain neutral when the situation doesn't warrant his vote to be polled. In the present circumstances, he has no necessity for the same. On

BSY CM for 4th time; but how long this time?

Bookanakere Siddalingappa Yeddyurappa(76) of the Bharatiya Janata Party was sworn in as the 24th Karnataka Chief Minister this evening on the lawns of Raj Bhavan. He is becoming the chief minister of the state for the fourth time. Governor Vajubhai Vala administered him the oath of office and secrecy.BS Yeddyurappa was sporting his traditional white safari and a green shawl on his shoulders. He alone took the oath and was not accompanied by any ministers. He became the chief minister for the first time on 12 November 2007 only to quit the post within a week on 19 November as the HD Kumaraswamy led Janata Dal-Secular legislature party refused to extend support under a pact of sharing power 20-20 months each.In the subsequent midterm elections, the JD-S not handing over power to the BJP itself became a big electoral issue paving way for a BJP led government in 2008.In that way, he led the first Bharatiya Janata Party government of any South Indian state and thus Karnataka began the g

Karnataka:Three Congress MLAs' disqualified

R Shankar, Ramesh Jharkiholi and Mahesh Kumatalli , all Congress MLAs' have been disqualified from the membership of the state Assembly with immediate effect and till May 2023. KR Rameshkumar, Speaker of the state Assembly announced in this regard late in the evening today and clarified that all the disqualified legislators are not only barred from contesting elections but also from holding any offices of profit. R Shankar represented Ranebennur constituency in Haveri district, Ramesh Jharkiholi was elected from Gokak while Mahesh Kumatalli had won from Athani, both the constituencies from Belagavi district. It may be recollected that R Shankar, a former Congressman, after failing to get party ticket rebelled against the party and contested before KB Koliwad, Congress candidate and Speaker of the outgoing Assembly. He emerged victorious in the nomination of Karnataka Prajnavanta Janata Party(KPJP), an outfit floated by 'Real Star' Upendra. The KPJP MLA, on the next day of
