Gujarat Model Illusions, Myths, and Contradictions

There has been enough systematic and well-orchestrated hype over the much-repeated word Gujarat Model, across the country and more so at the time of any general elections. Just like there are professional big mouths tom-toming the oft-repeated cliche there is no dearth of dissenting voices against the same. But on the ground, it looks like there are no takers for such arguments. Image Source:  Elets News Network Only campaigners or baiters: A tour with journalist friends in the poll-bound industrious state and meeting a variety of people give rise to only two kinds of opinions. Either you hear a vociferous campaign favouring the double engine administration or others baiting both the dispensation. It looks like there is no space for a third or neutral voice. Unimaginable progress over the years: Dr Deepa Nadkarni, a general practitioner based out of Ankleshwar in Bharuch district recollects-“I came to Ankleshwar in 1995 to practice. Then I was carrying my infant kid and the house we en

Jignesh Mevani faces an uphill battle in Vadgam

Jignesh Mevani, a former journalist turned activist, politician, Independent MLA and has evolved into an icon for Dalit youths, activists across the country. As of now, he is witnessing an uphill task in his reserved home constituency Vadgam in Banaskantha district which went to polls on Monday. The former Independent legislator is now an Indian National Congress (INC) candidate. Jignesh Mevani Former sympathizer turns BJP rival: Although Jignesh Mevani got elected as an Independent contestant in the 2017 general elections, he had blessings from the Congress party which supported his candidature by abstaining from fielding its candidate. The former Vadgam Congress MLA Manilal Vaghela was shifted to the neighbouring Idar constituency where he was defeated. However, this time the same Manilal Vaghela who had wholeheartedly extended support has now turned an opponent by being a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate. He quit Congress in November 2021 and joined the BJP in April 2022. Anti

Gujarat: Congress may increase its tally

The Indian National Congress (INC), which has been continuously sulking election after election for the past 27 years has reasons to smile. This time as the top echelons of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the party in power is of the perception that the permanent opposition party is set to wrest more than 10-12 seats than its present strength of 60.                                                                            Image Source: Wikipedia   Congress to go upward: In fact, the Congress had won in 77 seats last time, but thanks to Operation Lotus, 17 of them just walked away into the ruling party for green pastures. Going by the popular mood and pre-poll surveys of many a media outlet and acceptance of none other than the BJP itself, Congress is said to be increasing its tally compared to the present strength. BJP hint increase of INC seats: BJP top leaders themselves confide that the Congress party looks like increasing its party strength in the state Assembly. A senior AICC

AAP aims to become a national party by garnering Six percent of the votes

The entry of Aam Adami Party (AAP) headed by Arvind Kejriwal, Chief Minister of New Delhi and AAP National Convener into the electoral politics of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s home state Gujarat has raised the eyebrows of many a political onlooker more than the average voter. Although the party leaders publicly boast of unseating the 27years old BJP regime the real big dream of them is to garner at least six percent of the vote share to entitle themselves to a new national party. Image Source: ANI photo BJP and INC vote share intact so far: Interestingly in Gujarat, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in power for the last 27 years, and the Indian National Congress (INC), the opposition party for the same period of time continue to enjoy the same trends of the voter base. In 2017 Congress almost came close to corridors of power with 77 seats and 42 percent of the vote share. But, it remained uneven in comparison to its adversary BJP with 99 seats and 48 percent of votes. Questi

Thanks to 18% GST, the lighting lifestyle industry looks to be at crossroads

The lighting industry and more so the light emitting diode (LED) industry in the country has grown leaps and bounds in recent years. However, in comparison to the strides elsewhere perhaps India has a long way to go. Although you had Incandescent bulbs and Fluorescent lamps in the initial stage, the scenario changed altogether with the advent of the Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFL) and Light Emitting Diode (LED) Halogen lamps had their own say. In recent times, it looks like LED bulbs have a major say in the domestic market. The advantage of the light emitting diode is that it happens to be a semiconductor light source emitting light with the flow of the current, while electrons in the semiconductor recombine with electron holes, releasing energy in the form of photons. Interestingly, despite the domestic lighting industry emerging into a billion-dollar market it continues to be in its infancy when you ponder over if it is an organized one? As of now, the industry looks to be at crossro

BMHS: Marriages pave way for frequent get-togethers and parties!

Dharwad/Bengaluru: These days, the number of frequent get-togethers and parties is on the increase, thanks to the marriages of friends' children. If am right as Narayan keeps saying, the WhatsApp group of the 1976 batch came into being only after Deepak Laddad's kid’s wedding in Dharwad. All those who had assembled for the marriage felt the need of forming an online group and things started falling in place for meeting one another every now and then. Nani pays respect to ‘Teachers’: Probably, more than a handful of such marriages might have taken place in the last 3-4 years or so. By and large, most of them took place at Dharwad while a recent one of the sons of Raghuprasad was held in Bengaluru. Ravi's daughter's marriage gave the feel of another get-together. Narayan booked rail tickets for me well in advance to attend the marriage. In fact, we went much prior to the marriage so that he could meet his office commitments. Once, the marriage got over it was party time w
