New Generation Innovation and Entrepreneurship Development Center (NEWGEN IEDC) @ BNMIT


The Bhageerathi Bai Narayana Rao Maanay Institute of Technology (BNMIT) here, apart from several other accomplishments has achieved the unique distinction of bagging a grant of Rs 2.87 crores to develop innovative prototypes by budding engineering students of BNMIT.


Pioneer in entrepreneurship programs: In fact, the BNM Institute of Technology started its Entrepreneurship activities much before it was popularized by the Government of India and have been pioneers in this field. The numerous programmes of ED Cell paved way for the innovation grant of NSTEDB, DST, Government of India, New Delhi by the name NewGen IEDC, implemented, co-ordinated and managed by Entrepreneurship Development Institute of India (EDII) at Ahmedabad, informs Dr L. Vijayshree, Professor Department of MBA and Head New Gen IEDC, BNM Institute of Technology (BNMIT).

One among 178 colleges in India: She is also proud enough to reveal-However, BNMIT is one among 178 colleges across India to submit the proposal for NewGen IEDC and the only institute in Karnataka to receive a grant of Rs.2.87 crores from Department of Science and Technology in the year 2017. The purpose of this grant is to develop innovative prototypes by budding engineering students of BNMIT.


Opportunities galore from the first semester itself: Dr L. Vijayshree says-If the NewGen IEDC believes that every student has the right to convert their ideas into prototypes, BNMIT-NewGen IEDC believes that they need to protect their innovations and R&D work by registering for patents and copyrights as well. The opportunity for the students of BNMIT starts right from the first semester itself by an unique program termed by the college as IPL which is Innovative project Lab and encourage to nurture the hidden talents and research bend of mind.

Rs 2.5 lakhs in excess for deserving projects: She also disclosed-A mentor among the faculty is made available to guide and provide the necessary inputs, resources to conduct experiments. An exclusive amount of Rs.2.5 Lakhs per project is sponsored by BNMIT-NewGen IEDC after scrutiny of projects from every department and every group of students who desire to do a project. BNMIT also provides any funds in excess of Rs.2.5 lakhs wherever the project deserves.

100 projects supported so far! Till now around 100 plus projects are been supported by BNMIT –NewGen IEDC. Many projects have been taken to the next level with students starting their own companies and their ideas protected through Intellectual Property Rights(IPR). BNMIT is proud to state that there are 5 start-up's in campus, 12 patents have been filed, 2 copyrights have been granted and One design patent is filed by the students well supported by the college, explained Dr L. Vijayshree.


A host of entrepreneurship activities: She also gave a list of the activities undertaken-Skill development being the mantra of NewGen IEDC, we do sponsor lot of Entrepreneurship Activities which has helped students inculcate the sense of Innovativeness. Student Development Programs (SDP), Faculty Development Program (FDP) and many other workshops conducted for the benefit of the Faculty members and Students by BNMIT.


Following are the few innovative practices undertaken in the campus:

Innovative Project labs (IPL): The main aim of IPL is to encourage students to convert their ideas into mini prototypes / projects. A special slot exclusive for IPL is allocated in Time Table itself to ensure full attention and also for discussions and experiments. These IPL projects are exhibited at the end of the semester and this happens twice in an year under the name Summer IPL and Winter IPL. The best projects are been selected by experts from the industry and are awarded with cash prizes up to Rs.1 lakh.


Workshops: Ideas need to be protected. With this aim, many of the IPL projects teams are been given the importance of Intellectual Property Rights, Design Thinking and Patents as Workshop Themes. Such workshops are been attended by students of Engineering to disseminate the knowledge of IP (Intellectual Properties).


eXpress Talk / Chai Talk / Meet the CEO: Successful Entrepreneurs, Design Team and R&D personnel, CEOs, Young Startups are invited to Campus to have interactions with our budding Entrepreneurs on a regular basis.

Entrepreneurship Awareness Camp(EAC): EDII, Ahmedabad has funded Entrepreneurship Awareness Camp (EAC) which is a 3 day mega Entrepreneurship series conducted to encourage Entrepreneurship Ecosystem in Campus among students. So far BNMIT has been funded for 10 EAC programs.

Business Plan Competition: Students are encouraged to submit their ideas and are being judged by the successful Entrepreneurs for further improvements and innovations.

Ideation: BNMIT has Innovation and design Thinking as a subject in the first semester itself. Empathy focus an integral part of teaching to make the products more human centric and to address the needs of the society under Prime Minister’s Make in India program.

  1. New Gen IEDC is a turning point to BNMIT when it comes to projects. There was a sea change in the type of projects being carried out by our students. With the support of IEDC funds the students have developed projects that were very helpful to our society. The innovative projects developed by the students not only improved their knowledge and skill, but also kept the BNMIT flag flying high at national level. Kudos to Dr. L. Vijayashree for her untiring efforts to improve the research and development sector of BNMIT. Congratulations👏👏

Dr Veenashree Satyanarayan Bhat made headlines recently when she stood 11th in the All India National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET).
