Karnataka: 100 days of uneasiness, embarrassment and humiliation of BS Yediyurappa

The BS Yediyurappa led Bharatiya Janata Party(BJP) government in the state has managed to complete 100 days in office despite several hurdles all along the way.Looking back at those 100 days will not pave way for a pleasant memory either to partymen nor the onlookers. In fact, from day one itself, the saffron party's mass leader is embroiled into several instances of uneasiness, embarrassment and humiliation! For being the legislative party leader by the virtue of also being the opposition leader there was no necessity for the then party in the opposition benches to reelect him again as the floor leader to be sworn in as the new chief minister.

As expected BS Yediyurappa took the oath of office and secrecy as the new chief minister after the HD Kumaraswamy led Janata Dal-Secular(JD-S)-Indian National Congress(INC) alliance government failed to prove its majority in the state Assembly Such a change over was made possible, thanks to the resignation of 14 Congress and three JD-S MLAs' to their membership of the state Assembly unitedly. But the development was no big moment of celebration for the ruling party as none of the bigwigs who matter attended the swearing-in ceremony.

BS Yediyurappa was sworn in as the chief minister but was made to wait for 26 days to form the cabinet and handful of them to allot the portfolios.According to BSY's admission, the state got three Deputy chief ministers' on the advice of the party high command. It's not that there were no Deputy CMs' earlier. They were there earlier also but there used to be one DCM during the Janata Dal and Congress regimes.

The practice of having two of them started during BSY's earlier stint in 2008. But three DCMs' is an unprecedented development and part of new history now.One former chief minister and two former DCMs' also joined the cabinet merely as ministers without much significance attached to themselves.

The state experienced the worst floodwaters havoc and BS Yediyurappa as head of the lone member cabinet was compelled to make many a flying visit to the affected areas across the state. The adverse weather conditions improved for better once the cabinet came into being and district in-charge ministers were announced. However, all pleas for immediate central relief went into the wind. The opposition parties made use of the opportunity to hammer the state government on this grave lapse.

They also recalled similar such situation earlier when BSY had become the CM for the first time in 2008. Dr Manmohan Singh, then Prime Minister made an aerial survey of the affected regions and before departing had announced Rs 1,000 crores financial aid to the state. It was a piquant situation to the state government headed by BSY. The state had elected 25 BJP MPs' and a BJP supported Independent candidate to the Lok Sabha. Both, the JD-S and Congress were left with one seat each. This result was again a new history in the state. But all these claims hardly came to any advantage to the new ruling party for providing succour to tens of thousands of hapless victims who had lost their homes, standing crops and fields!

On the other hand, BSY kept on assuring people in distress that the central government will soon announce a relief package for the state. But nothing of that sort happened.Amit Shah, BJP national president and Union Home Minister, Ms Nirmala Sitharaman, Union Finance Minister elected to the Rajya Sabha from the state paid visits to the affected areas. But both of them didn't declare any monetary aid to the state. These visits were later followed by the official teams of the central government. Meanwhile, there were appeals on behalf of the state government for the immediate release of Rs 5,000 crores to the state for taking up relief measures. But the appeals didn't yield any tangible results. As expected the opposition party leaders hurled abuses on the state government. Siddaramaiah, former chief minister and Congress party leader repeatedly claimed: The BJP high command never wanted BSY to become the CM. That's the reason the centre is not allocating any money to the state nor he is being given an appointment to meet the Prime Minister for submitting a memorandum.

Tejasvi Surya, the first time MP from Bengaluru South claimed: There is no requirement for central funds to take up relief measures in the state. This statement was enough to open up a pandora's box leading to ridiculing the claims of the young MP.In between Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid an overnight visit to the city to be a witness of the Chandrayaan2. But he never uttered a word of solace to the flood victims of the state.

In the next few days, the prime minister visited the United States and took part in the over publicised event at Houston where he paid homage to the victims of floods while he failed to condole the deaths in the state even on his twitter handle. After more than two months of the devastation due to incessant rains and floods and hue and cry in the political circles and among netizens the state, at last, was released Rs 1,200 crores when it had pleaded for Rs 38,000 crores!

BSY had to relinquish the state party presidentship following his elevation as the CM. He did so but again there was set back to him. Navin Kumar Kateel, Mangaluru MP was made his successor when BSY had his own plans of his earlier position. On the day of taking over of charge, the new state party president claimed of taking the party ahead under the able leadership of BSY. After having said so, in no time he packed off all the office employees appointed by his predecessor!

This was only his first salvo. He later disowned a committee of city legislators formed by the CM to decide the issue of nominees for the position of Mayor and Deputy Mayor of the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagar Palike(BBMP). Like such uneasiness, embarrassment and humiliation BS Yediyurappa has completed 100 days in office. How many more days he is left with is a hot subject debated in the political circles here now.

He was 69 years old and not at all an age for his generation to bid adieu. Walks to Death: Paul Cardoza was a little bit hefty for his height and age; otherwise there were no visible symptoms to hint of any ailments he had been challenged with. Even on the fateful day, he attended to the chores in the hotel until the afternoon before proceeding to neighbour Hubballi for a cardiac test. It is said that he literally walked to the health check-up facility to undergo the examination. No, he was not destinated for it as he suffered a massive stroke and never to recover! A jovial personality: In the passing away of Paul Cardoza Dharwad has lost one o
