Karnataka: Street fight for BJP ticket begins...

Thanks to the announcement of the calendar of events for by-elections to the 15 Assembly constituencies in the state the street fight for bagging the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party(BJP) tickets is also on a new high now!

Rajarajeshwarinagar in Bengaluru Urban and Ranebennur in Haveri districts should have also gone for similar by-elections simultaneously as the MLAs' of these constituencies have tendered resignations to these seats.

The defeated Bharatiya Janata Party(BJP) rivals have contested these elections, so the election commission has set aside the decision of holding elections in these two places.

Elsewhere the battle by the erstwhile Indian National Congress(INC) and Janata Dal-Secular(JD-S) legislators' for bagging the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party(BJP) tickets is on. In some constituencies, there has been stiff opposition from defeated BJP candidates for parting away from the saffron party ticket to the new entrants.

Sharat Bachhegowda, son of BN Bachhegowda, BJP Member of Parliament from Chikkaballapur Lok Sabha constituency did a show of his might before the residence of BS Yediyurappa, Chief Minister.Hundreds of his supporters gathered before the CM's home and raised slogans in favour of Sharat Bachhegowda and against BS Yediyurappa and the BJP.

Their one-point demand was: Give party ticket to our leader or else he will be compelled to contest as an independent candidate.

BN Bachhegowda and former Hoskote Congress MLA MTB Nagaraj are both arch-rivals and sworn political enemies. Since MTB Nagaraj has made an above turn under operation lotus strategy the going has become quite tough on the home turf. Both these families are known for their muscle, money and political clout apart from trying to snub one another in every possible opportunity for more than three decades.

But in the changed circumstances both the opponent families have suddenly come together under one umbrella which has become an overdose of suffocation to the Bachhegowda family and more so with Sharat Bachhegowda. His bio-data says: If there is one word that encapsulates the life and work of Sharath Bachegowda from his childhood till the present, it is 'service' - service to the nation, service to the poor, service to his people...

...He is an alumnus of P.E.S Institute of Technology (affiliated to Visvesvaraya Technological University), where he pursued a Bachelor of Engineering in Mechanical from 2000-2004. After graduating, Sharath Bachegowda completed his Master of Science Degree in University of Michigan (U.S.A) from 2005-2006...

Well, all such academic accomplishments give you an impression of a thorough professional academician. But if you are under such an illusion, then you are sadly mistaken!

Irrespective of the academic background Sharath Bachhegowda is now a typical run of the mill politicians more well-known on the rustic Hoskote soil. In spite of changed circumstances, he is hell-bent upon his demand over the party ticket or contest as an independent candidate!

There is no way that BS Yediyurappa can let down MTB Nagaraj, who was also a minister in the JDS-INC coalition government from giving the party ticket to contest. You can very well imagine the situation on the ground as an effect of such a political decision. The surcharged atmosphere is not limited to Hosakote alone and more or less the same conditions prevail in almost all constituencies where by-elections are due on 21 October. The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party(BJP) government is already at the receiving end for failing to come to the rescue of the floodwaters victims. Both INC and JD-S are hammering the state and central governments for their failure in addressing the woes of rainwater victims.

Apart from such adverse political terrain now the BJP is coupled by opposition within the party against allowing former INC-JD-S MLAs' contesting on party tickets. So much before the BJP plans to win over the hearts of the electorate it is high time that it also attempts to bring back the warring factions to fight unitedly on the election war front?

Paul Mamu becomes part of Dharwad's history

People originally from Dharwad and most of whom migrated decades ago elsewhere across the state, country and world in search of green pastures were in for a sudden shock since late evening on Monday. They all shared similar sentiments, fond moments and profound grief in the passing away of Paul Cardoza of the renowned Hotel PAUL’S at Vidyagiri. He was 69 years old and not at all an age for his generation to bid adieu. Walks to Death: Paul Cardoza was a little bit hefty for his height and age; otherwise there were no visible symptoms to hint of any ailments he had been challenged with. Even on the fateful day, he attended to the chores in the hotel until the afternoon before proceeding to neighbour Hubballi for a cardiac test. It is said that he literally walked to the health check-up facility to undergo the examination. No, he was not destinated for it as he suffered a massive stroke and never to recover! A jovial personality: In the passing away of Paul Cardoza Dharwad has lost one o

Priest on his own inclination: Dr Godwin Shiri himself voluntarily opted for the priestly vocation of becoming a Pastor at a young age, much against the wishes of his family. The sight of the Cross of Lord Jesus Christ and the scenario of thousands of workers marching holding red flags in his native town Mangaluru had a lasting effect on him as a young boy. Recalling the good old days Godwin Shiri admits-"Perhaps they sowed in me the seeds of compassion and social justice".
