Karnataka:Three Congress MLAs' disqualified

R Shankar, Ramesh Jharkiholi and Mahesh Kumatalli, all Congress MLAs' have been disqualified from the membership of the state Assembly with immediate effect and till May 2023.

KR Rameshkumar, Speaker of the state Assembly announced in this regard late in the evening today and clarified that all the disqualified legislators are not only barred from contesting elections but also from holding any offices of profit.

R Shankar represented Ranebennur constituency in Haveri district, Ramesh Jharkiholi was elected from Gokak while Mahesh Kumatalli had won from Athani, both the constituencies from Belagavi district.

It may be recollected that R Shankar, a former Congressman, after failing to get party ticket rebelled against the party and contested before KB Koliwad, Congress candidate and Speaker of the outgoing Assembly. He emerged victorious in the nomination of Karnataka Prajnavanta Janata Party(KPJP), an outfit floated by 'Real Star' Upendra.

The KPJP MLA, on the next day of announcement of May 2018 Assembly election results, visited the house of BS Yeddyurappa, state BJP president in the morning along with KS Eshwarappa, BJP leader and extended support to the saffron party for forming the government. But by evening he switched sides and appeared in the Congress office, wherein he declared his support to the Congress party only to be inducted as a cabinet minister in the HD Kumaraswamy led Janata Dal-Secular and Indian National Congress alliance government.

He was made the Forest Minister and continued in that position for a few months. However, during a reshuffle later he was dropped from the ministry. The reason then given was that he refused to merge his party into Congress and join the party.

As soon as the Congress witnessed rebellion within the party and paved way for simultaneous resignations by many an MLA, the alliance cabinet was again expanded. This time R Shankar was once again made a minister. But before doing so, he gave in writing to the Speaker that he had merged his KPJP with the Congress. Recently, he met the Governor and handed over another letter mentioning that he is extending unconditional support to the Bharatiya Janata Party.

Ramesh Jharkiholi(Gokak reserve Constituency) and Mahesh Kumatalli(Athani), both in Belagavi district are the other two Congress MLAs' who have been disqualified from the membership of the state legislative Assembly with immediate effect and until May 2023.Ramesh Jharkiholi, the eldest among Jharkiholi brothers was literally on warpath with the party leaders ever since the JDS-INC alliance government came into being. He was the Belagavi district in-charge minister for five years during the Siddaramaiah regime.

Later under the new dispensation also he continued to enjoy the same prime position. But his differences with Ms Lakshmi Hebbalkar, party colleague and Belagavi Rural MLA increased with no signs of a rapprochement at all.He frequented Mumbai many a time and was also closeted with other disgruntled Congress MLAs'. Of late the Congress legislators were accompanied by three Janata Dal legislators as well.

The speaker is yet to pronounce his ruling over 13 other resignations submitted by other Congress and JDS legislators. He informed the media persons of acting on the same within a couple of days.

It is said that he literally walked to the health check-up facility to undergo the examination. No, he was not destinated for it as he suffered a massive stroke and never to recover!
